If it is locked up in your garage and protected by a sophisticated alarm system then it will be pretty secure. However once the vehicle leaves those safe confines it becomes very vulnerable. Enclosed trailers and alarm systems offer some security but when the vehicle sits out at an event unattended or in front of a motel that is when it is at its highest risk level. An alarm system will alert you to the fact that someone is messing with it but one of the best ways to stop them from hot wiring it and driving it away is a battery disconnect system.

Gate Common wisdom on the IP boards says not to bother replacing the wire as this will only lead to the problem re-occurring later. I’m not so sure I buy this, especially in fresh water. My boat is a and I do have the problem occasionally but not often enough to have done anything about it yet. If I replace the wire, I would expect it to last at least as long as the original if not more and any 30 year fix is good enough for me.
The accepted fix is to insert another solenoid into the circuit. I have seen the Radioshack PN: The solenoid should have four posts, two high amp, two low amp. On the low amp circuit, connect the starter key wire to one post, and ground the second post. Engaging the key will trip this circuit. Then from the second high amp post run a 8 gauge wire back to the post on the starter where the wire from the key originally came from.
How do I hook up starter? – 1999 Ford Windstar
It did not have remote start on the build sheet. It said “Less Remote Start” so it came with a 3 button key fob panic, lock, and unlock. I was talking to a friend of mine who is a Ford tech. He then told me that all Explorers above the base model have remote start installed. It is just deactivated if you did not purchase the option.

switch harness in the vehicle and in the last sequence, the Remote Starter again sends (+) Positive 12 volts out on the Accessory wire and the Accessories turn back “ON”.
I recently purchased a good schematic which shows the starter relay being located on the firewall, near the center. There are three relays and a red diode unit located there. The starter relay is the largest of the three relays, and located on the left side exhaust manifold side of the car. It switches on power to the starter motor solenoid switch when the car is in neutral, and the key switch is turned to position 3 start. Your remote starter switch will work, if you gently pull the large white wire with the red stripe off of terminal C4 of the starter relay and connect one of the spring clips to that wire.
It goes down to the control terminal on the starter solenoid. The relay is then bypassed by your remote switch. Note that, in normal operation, the relay makes sure you are in neutral before engaging the starter, and without it, you can inadvertently turn the engine over with it in gear. Also, when you push the remote starter switch, that white wire will have full battery voltage on it and the spring clip can short out if allowed to touch the engine or chassis, or almost anything else.
I hope this helps.
