Roman face mask from Kalkriese Kalkriese: To the south was the Kalkriese hill. Although it is only meters high, it is hard to pass along its northern slope, because a traveler has to cross many deep brooks and rivulets. To the north of the Kalkriese is a large wetland, which stretches north for a large distance. Between the great bog and the hill is a more or less accessible zone of about 1 kilometer wide, and it comes as no surprise that in the nineteenth century, German engineers have chosen this solid east-west corridor for the construction of the Mittelland Canal and a road. The most accessible part of this zone has a width of only meters. This site could well have been called “narrows” or saltus. In fact, this also indicated by a nearby topographical name: During the next years, it became increasingly likely that the Roman army that had been defeated at Kalkriese had been none other than the three legions of Varus. There were so many finds, that it was hard to believe that the fight at Kalkriese was a minor skirmish.

Dating back to the early 13th century, its authorship is unknown, but it is thought to have been written by an Austrian author from between Passau and Vienna for recitation in the Austrian court. Brief allusions to the Siegfried story also exist in much earlier works, such as Waltharius and Beowulf. Technically, the poem is written in four line roughly hexameter stanzas, with strong pauses in the middle of each line, rhyming AABB, and with the final line of each stanza usually lengthened by an extra foot.

The first synagogue known to have been burned down was near the river Euphrat, on command of the bishop of Kallinikon in the year Council of Toledo Jews were enslaved, their property confiscated, and their children forcibly baptized. Thousands of Jews slaughtered , maybe 12, total. In the year Columbus set sail to conquer a New World, more than , Jews were expelled from Spain, many died on their way: In Poland about , Jews were slain.
There were even concentration camps exclusively for children! In these camps – the most notorious was Jasenovac, headed by a Franciscan friar – orthodox-Christian serbians and a substantial number of Jews were murdered. Like the Nazis the Catholic Ustasha burned their victims in kilns, alive the Nazis were decent enough to have their victims gassed first. But most of the victims were simply stabbed, slain or shot to death, the number of them being estimated between , and , , in a rather tiny country.
Many of the killers were Franciscan friars. The atrocities were appalling enough to induce bystanders of the Nazi “Sicherheitsdient der SS”, watching, to complain about them to Hitler who did not listen. The pope knew about these events and did nothing to prevent them.

Adapting conflict archaeology to new surroundings. The discipline of conflict archaeology began with the exploration of the Little Bighorn battlefield in the s. Although the methodology was initially developed around the parameters of C19th black-powder warfare, the boundaries of Although the methodology was initially developed around the parameters of C19th black-powder warfare, the boundaries of study have since been rapidly expanded. A diverse range of conflict sites and landscapes, from classical antiquity to the late C20th, have been incorporated into the wider remit of the discipline.
Each new temporal expansion has brought new challenges. There may also be significant discrepancies in the quality of the historical evidence. For post-medieval sites, the evidence may be sufficient to pin-point a conflict site on a modern map, while for the medieval and earlier, even a regional location may be beyond the extant sources. These differences have resulted in the development of period-specific methodological adaptations which aim to make the most of the conflict archaeology from the site; and for the most part, they have done so successfully.
However, these methodological adaptations are increasingly leading to insular, period-specific approaches and research aims, which often do not contribute to wider conflict archaeology, and fail to incorporate methodological developments made in other areas of the discipline. This paper aims to provide a brief overview of the methodological adaptations which have been made in the discipline of conflict archaeology, and a discussion of how these changes have impacted the research aims of both individual historical periods, and the discipline as a whole.

Reconstructing Roman Marching Tunes Crispvs Paul Geddes One thing which distinguishes the RMRS from many other groups is that we have a good repertoire of songs and chants which we can use either whilst marching or during our field displays. This adds to the effectiveness of our impression and is something which we are often complimented on by members of other groups. One problem which our enthusiastic singing and chanting perhaps hides though, is the fact that we have far less evidence for the songs of the period we depict than exists for other.
What evidence there is amounts to little more than a thimble full compared to the bucket loads available to, for instance, Napoleonic period re-enactors.

The towns important location close to the banks of the River Rhine is well illustrated together with the layout and defensive wall. The two temples can be seen with the Harbour Temple close to the river on the left of picture and the Capitoline Temple centre-top of picture. The great Northern Gate is closest to camera. The new town received an organised infrastructure with water conduit, sewers and a street grid, which encompassed temples, a forum, an amphitheatre and was surrounded by a city wall and gates.
The town was very much involved in supporting the army and its activities providing a point of embarkation for troops and vital supplies along the German river network. Much of the remains of the Roman town still remain uncovered and awaiting scientific investigation, with the whole area now protected it’s preserved for future generations and improved archaeological techniques. The park however takes the archaeology further with the reconstruction of working replicas and copies of the finds to further research the techniques and usage of various pieces of equipment and discover what was actually possible.
So the reconstructions of the town-wall, amphitheatre, temple and guesthouse are reconstructions based on the original archaeological footprint of these buildings using the same materials and building techniques as in the originals and corresponding to the originals size and position. Likewise the boat yard has been able to take the remains of Roman transports and warships used in the area to serve as blueprints for building full size replicas using the Roman construction techniques and then seeing what was possible with these boats when navigating the local waterways.
This is all great stuff for the academic historians but also serves as food for the mind for the historical wargamer interested in how the Romans, operating along the Limes lived, worked, soldiered and died and really helps to underpin a greater understanding and depth to our hobby. The Town Park On entering the park one immediately gets a perfect idea of the size of the town, with the network of paths lined with trees and the perimeter wall indicated with part reconstruction, part box hedge, giving a great perspective, with the areas of open ground indicting the various Insulas housing and town buildings in an area encompassing twenty equally sized plots that lie buried below.
