Motorcycle Battery and Charger Reviews

How do you charge a 12 volt car motorcycle or boat battery with a battery charger? Also, it not safe or in any way good practice just to put both of the charger cables directly onto the battery terminals. This is the safe way to do it: Then clip the -ve cable to a good “Ground” point somewhere on the vehicle’s bodywork, at least a yard or a metre away from the battery. When you want to remove the cable, do this: Always for safety sake!!!!! Wear safety googles and cover exposed skin before putting any battery on a charger, with that being said be sure to put the positive red or larger terminal on first, then clip on the negative black or smaller terminal last, also to avoid sparks and possible explosion of the battery acid in your face etc. Try to be charging in a well ventilated area to help avoid the possibility of explosive fumes meeting up with unexpected sparks Work smart, work safely!!!

When and How to Use a Trickle Charger April 18, A trickle charger provides a more sustainable charge than a quick jump start. Learn about the benefits and best practices to using a trickler charger. A trickle charger is a car battery charger designed to be left on a car for a long period of time to re-charge the battery. It slowly adds the charge to the battery and does not allow for the normal depletion of charge that batteries commonly have. There are differing opinions of how long a trickle charger can be left on a battery and for that reason, different types have been manufactured.

Some trickle chargers can be left on a battery indefinitely.

A trickle charger – you just disconnect the battery and hook up the charger to the terminals and let it sit over night. If you let a battery sit in the cold they lose there charge. You could also just jump start the quad and take it for a long ride, and that should charge it.

Slow, Charge and Discharging The storage capacity of a lead-acid automotive type battery is not fixed, but varies according to how slowly the battery is discharged. Similarly, the charge capacity of a battery is not fixed, but varies on how slowly a battery is charged. With batteries, the slower the charge the better! When a battery is charged or discharged, this initially affects only the chemicals closest to the gap between the battery plates and the electrolyte.

Fast Charging Not the best for a battery If a battery has been completely discharged e. Because after a few hours this charge will spread to the volume of the plates and electrolyte, resulting in a charge that may be so low as to be incapable of starting a vehicle.

Supposedly BMW specifies using the terminals under the hood, rather than directly to the battery. I can’t recall the exact detail of why, but remember that it has something to do with the car electronics being potentially harmed by attaching directly to the battery terminals. There is a circuit that protects the car electronics when you attach to the terminals under the hood – you bypass that when you attach to the battery.

Yes, I suppose this is more relevant to jump starting current, rather than super low battery maintainer current. I don’t keep my E90 on a float charger, because I drive it miles a week, it never needs a secondary charging source for the battery.

Thread Starter Battery Trickle Charger pre-wiring install For our friends that have long winters or those who store their vehicles, who wish to have a battery trickle charger while the vehicle “hibernates”, this thread is for you. I also decided to install the ring mount pre-wiring that came with the battery charger as I didn’t want to deal with the battery clamps.

Below is a pix of the completed pre-wire install: The blue arrows point to the negative wire. This has been threaded through an unused rubber grommet in the firewall to the battery compartment, highlighted by purple circle and routed to one of the factory ground in the engine compartment the bolt is highlighted by a round orange circle in the pix to the right. The negative wire is also anchored by plastic tie and covered with soft rubber at this junction green circle. The covered connector for the trickle charger is highlighted by the yellow circle to the left of the pix.

Whether you own a car, a motorcycle, an ATV, or a boat, at one point or another you’ve likely been faced with the conundrum of a dead or depleted battery. And you probably dealt with it the way most people do, by jump-starting it or hooking it up to a car battery charger.

But there’s a better solution, especially when it comes to caring for those smaller, more sensitive recreational vehicles:

Battery Maintainer and Trickle Charger by Black & Decker®. Keep your vehicle, boat, RV or other battery at peak charge with this battery maintainer.

This depends on how fast you want to charge your battery and the size of the actual battery you are charging. The higher the amp setting, the faster your battery will charge. Check your battery specifications for the charge rate. Certain batteries like deep-cycle batteries with a Group Size of 27 or higher may require a amp charge rate or higher to be charged.

Why doesn’t my battery charger shut off in the 2-amp position when charging my vehicle or deep-cycle battery? The 2-amp charge rate is intended for small batteries such as motorcycles, snowmobiles and lawn garden tractors. Consequently, when trying to charge a larger battery at that rate, it will take a very long time and the battery may discharge at a greater rate than the 2-amp charge can provide. It is best to charge at a higher charge rate like 6-amps, amps or higher.

Why does my deep-cycle battery overheat when my charger is in the deep-cycle setting? If during charging the battery begins to emit gas, or if the battery becomes warm, use the Regular Battery Setting. How do I read the amp meter? The amp meter shows how much current the battery charger is outputting to the battery. When you turn on the charger, it outputs a high amount of current electrical power.

Feb ’11 I’ve wondered if those Optima batteries were worth it or not. My last 2 cars went to K and K miles and they each only had the battery replaced once with Costco’s brand. Never had issues with them so never picked up the Optima. The prices were crazy.

On the BMW trickle charger question– The BMW (canbus) battery charger is relatively easy to use but has some specifics. Like it won’t work if the basic battery voltage is below 7 volts. There is also a key cycling to get the onboard socket to recognize the charger hook up.

This is especially important if you tend to go go weeks without using the battery because otherwise it needs to have a high cold cranking amp power to be able to start. This is where the best trickle charger can enter and help. There are a range of different chargers that you can use to charge your battery, but the most important thing is what the charger does once the battery is fully charged.

What is a trickle charger? A trickle charger is a type of battery car charger that is designed so it can be left on for a prolonged time period whilst it recharges your car battery. It slowly charges the battery whilst preventing any depletion that would normally occur in batteries. There are differing views about the maximum period of time a trickle charger can be left on, but this varies from charger to charger and manufacturer to manufacturer. Some trickle chargers can be left on indefinitely whilst charging which is great for example if you have a vehicle that you only use now and then or if you store it in your garage over winter.

A trickle charger will ensure that your battery will not go flat after long periods of non-use and will still start when you need it. Deltran Battery Tender 1. Cage SC , I understand that this is so you can plug the end of the regular cables to the Trickle Charger and and then clip those to ANY bike and charge it up over night. But doesn’t this invariably lead to the question as to whether you could carry the clip cables in your bags and then hook up the cable connectors to your permanent plug-in and then jump another bike or have that bike jump you?

Next A car battery contains chemicals that produce hydrogen gas during use. Hydrogen gas is volatile and has been known to explode under certain conditions, causing serious injuries. For example, a car battery may explode while starting the car, while jump starting or by carelessly shorting the terminals with a screwdriver. In fact, under certain conditions a car battery may explode while just sitting in a parked car or on a table [source: Keeping this mind, here’s how to safely use a car battery charger: Use the correct charger for your particular car battery.

Check the car owner’s manual for information or ask your car dealer or trusted auto mechanic. Read the charger manual and make sure you understand how the charger works and what precautions are necessary. Pay close attention to all the warnings. Remove both battery cables from the battery terminals. First remove the negative black cable and then the positive red cable. Check that the charger is not plugged in to an electric outlet and that the power switch is off.

Decide whether you want to charge the battery slowly trickle charge or quickly. Select a lower charging voltage and current for a trickle charge and a higher setting for a quicker charge.
